Cause of the Week: Poverty

Poverty Week Oct. 16-22, 2017

"As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality exist in our world, none of us can truly rest."
— Nelson Mandela, Former President of South Africa

Poverty means not having enough money to meet your most basic human needs. Today, 14.4 percent of Americans live in poverty.  Worldwide, 767 million people are estimated to live off $1.90 or less per day.  Your contributions can make a big difference in the lives of the poor, and may even be the difference between life and death.

Here's how you can make an impact:

  • $1 provides 10 meals for underprivileged children in a summer meals program in Maryland.
  • $85 provides a bicycle to a family, which could mean the difference between a job and unemployment or attending school and staying home.
  • $150 provides training, business skills development and equipment like sewing machines to help women start their own tailoring business.

Don’t just learn about it, post about it! Have you or someone you know been affected by poverty? Was there a time when you’ve made a difference in the life of someone less fortunate? Share your experience on social media and remember to #ShowSomeLoveCFC!
